OUR GOAL IS TO Create awareness on the rights and responsibility of girls and women with disabilitiesPromote social and economic wellbeing of girls and women with disabilitiesStrengthen participation of girls and women with disabilities in decision-makingBuild self-esteem of girls and women with disabilities
We tackle the intersections between gender, disability and culture as lived realities that have continued to push girls and young women with disabilities from the center to the margins.
Who We Are
Bintisphere is a women-led organization founded in Kenya to empower girls and young women with disabilities to achieve full participation in development. “Binti” is an African Swahili word meaning daughter whereas “Sphere” is an English word meaning a section of society or an aspect of life distinguished and unified by a particular characteristic. Bintisphere, therefore is an organization that empowers girls/young women with disabilities to live a holistic life in all spheres. We inculcate the power of self and collective advocacy amongst young girls as a tool for meaningful inclusion in social and economic spheres.
We advance full integration and holistic participation of girls and young women with disabilities in social and economic development. We seek to strengthen the voices of girls and women with disabilities and challenge the power dynamics that continue to marginalize them.
More often, girls and women with disabilities fall in the cracks of disability and women’s movements rendering them more invisible in either space. Historic discrimination, stigma, and stereotypes which are deeply rooted in African cultural settings have continued to diminish the self-esteem and the potential of girls and young women with disabilities.
Our interventions uphold the theory that communities are the core agents of societal transformation. We tackle the intersections between gender, disability, and culture as lived realities that have continued to push girls and young women with disabilities from the center to the margins. We use community organizing, sports for change, self and collective advocacy to advance health & fitness, education & economic empowerment and promote leadership and governance.
A just society where the rights of girls and women with disabilities are valued, respected, and recognized.
To strengthen power, leadership and promote the rights of girls and young women with disabilities through community organizing and collective advocacy.
